In order to be able to go out on the sea ice, I needed to be trained to know how to read cracks and ice depth. So, I spent the day out and about on the sea ice....viewing seals and penguins, historical sites and glaciers. And, oh yeah, cracks. Here we are churning an ice-core drill to measure the depth of the ice.
After the hole is drilled, we can stick a weighted tape measure in that tells us the ice thickness.
This is Barne Glacier. It is a noticeable landmark when traveling north along the coast of McMurdo Sound.
Don't worry, this guy was keeping an eye on us at all times.
Cute!
Now these guys are a riot! They are constantly running around making noise. These are Adelie penguins -- smaller than Emperor penguins (the ones you're used to seeing)
This is my friend Cassandra -- look at Mount Erebus in the distance. Mount Erebus is the southernmost active volcano in the world.
Yup, we all had a great time!
